CHIANG MAI is the 2nd largest city in Thailand with 600.000 inhabitants and a large provincial area. Yet, despite this fact it has managed to keep it's small town charme and even walking the inner city one cannot help the feeling to be in a small town or moving from village to village. Chiang Mai is known as the "Rose of the North", mainly for its moderate climate, especially during the winter months from october to march and its unique location inside the Chiang Mai valley, 700 km north of Bangkok and 300 m above sealevel. The city is surrounded by mountains, to the north the high plains of Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai expand all the way to the borders of Laos and Burma which are only 200 km away. Many of these valleys have only been really accessible since the 80s and 90s.
Accordingly the mountains and valleys are inhabited by colourful and unique hilltribes, the landscape as yet quite unspoilt and to the locals offer access to the countryside from the centre of the city within minutes.
Our property is located appr. 12 km north of the city, at the fringe of Borsang village, the local handicraft centre producing natural papers, umbrellas and woodcarving. It is rural and there is no hint of the city that is only a 20 minute drive away. Access is easy and very cheap (by local Minibus 25 cents) though it would be advised to rent a motorbike or a car to make use of the full potential of the area.
We have called our "resort", if we may call it that, SECRET GARDEN, inspired by the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett and that is exactly what it has become : an enclosed, parklike garden with lake, tropical vegetation and small, almost hidden bungalows that allow a retreat yet keeping in close contact with your hosts and fellow guests. It gives you the possibility to spend a few days relaxing and focussing on yourself.
To reach Chiang Mai, you will necessarily fly into Bangkok. There are very few international flights directly to Chiang Mai. Take 2 or 3 days to visit Bangkok, it's an experience in itself. The actual flight to Chiang Mai then only takes 1 hour and the airport is only a short 15 minute drive away from the Secret Garden.
We are not a traditionally "Touristic Enterprise"....our aim is that you arrive as guests and part as friends.
